During a two‑week residency in the former Orangerie of a 19th‑century estate—once famed for its monumental greenhouses—I built micro‑greenhouse prototypes anyone can make with what’s close at hand.My raw material was the plastic bottle. A bottle is a membrane meant to hold liquid, but what else might it hold? By following its industrial logic and creating almost no scrap, I let the bottle bloom. Cut, unfolded, and recomposed, discarded bottles became a constellation of tiny shelters for sprouting seeds.These micro-greenhouses evoke the appearance of a delicate landscape in bloom—reminiscent of exotic plants scattered across the site. Though made from discarded plastic bottles, they transcend their origin, entering a quiet reciprocity with the landscape: existing vegetation offers shade, humidity, and wind protection, shaping the microclimate in which their contents can grow.Jardin Clandestine reconfigures the historic park as a “third landscape,” defamiliarizing everyday consumer objects while extending the research begun in Contemporary Reconfigurations, the current phase at Bierbais exploring new relations between humans, landscapes, and waste through collective care and experimentation.In collaboration with @phdinonenight, @orangeriesbierbais, and the International Center for Contemporary Garbage Kinshasa (@eddy_ekete).Supported by Culture Moves Europe Grant and Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.

The 240 cm thick wall is weakly reinforced, and in itself meets the requirements of building physics. Like the respiratory organ, it contains installation shafts in its mass. The mass of the wall is deepened. The thickness of the wall becomes the depth of the space. Stepped niches are created as a counterbalance to the spatial unity of the hall. They are extroverted towards the interior, introverted towards the outer space. The sports center building consists of a dominant volume of the pool hall and a subordinate, partially buried volume of the building with an entrance, changing rooms and a fitness area. Under both volumes there is an underground garage.

The opposition of the pool hall and the external appearance of the volume is translated into a material language. The interior is lined with ceramics, and the exterior facade is in rough natural concrete, with the exception of the smooth surface of the stair niches.

The ceiling construction of flat prefabricated beams through its laws follows the principle of mass deepening. The beams are shortened, their height is reduced and they create ceiling niches that illuminate the hall. The lightness of the ceiling reduces the resonance of the hall.The mass of the wall created the fantasy of the "time of the wall". Fantasy multiplies the depth of niches to infinity.

︎The idea of the installation is to create layers of air. Air is a fluid, a mixture of substances: it transmits odors, allergens, disease germs, it is dry or moist, it transmits sound. Space is divided by anti-dust foil into layers so that in each layer one can feel one of its peculiarities: hot radiator, boiling water, stinking fish. When quarantine ensued, the installation took on a new dimension. These layers are also small air containers, a kind of a safe quarantine space. The excessive use of nylon or plastic may be the material expression of the quarantine and infection, which led to an experiment with those materials.

While experimenting with anti-dust and thermal foils in the living room, trying to reconstruct the idea, the author spontaneously found herself in a “clean air” bubble, wearing a thermal, aseptic cloak. The cloak, the foil backdrop, and the golden earrings merged like a kind of Gesamtkunstwerk. The author took pictures and animated the photos into a gif. The removed elements of identity on her face are also the door to the virus.

four places

at first, there was a feeling of familiarity. the communities that we saw were okay - they didn't need much help. we felt the instinct to bring them closer and envelop them, so they could become what they are: comfortable places.

<img width="2000" height="1429" width_o="2000" height_o="1429" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/189d8eabc1fd471389a6162072f5bc483f47eba9040b221ea5735adb90582d8f/2.nacrt-sira-situacija-4-mjesta-2-uredena-para.jpg" data-mid="192009009" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/189d8eabc1fd471389a6162072f5bc483f47eba9040b221ea5735adb90582d8f/2.nacrt-sira-situacija-4-mjesta-2-uredena-para.jpg" />

four entities exist together, each with its own character, linked with both old and new dependencies. there's the old town of nin, an island, productively coexisting with the saltworks for centuries. next to it, an ordinary settlement of ždrijac with some ordinary coastal troubles. a bit away from everything else, there's the brickyard, a lonely monument to a past life. we saw these places and their connections as something to observe, reinforce, modify.
︎

ždrijac, as a typical coastal suburb, struggles with representation and identity. because of that, it was crucial to see how it can be validated in its existing state. we were interested in seeing the values of the place and exploring their potential. the neighborhood finds itself inside a constructed forest, protected but free. inside, densification occurs, in an attempt to re-establish closeness in ždrijac.

<img width="700" height="700" width_o="700" height_o="700" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/199b4be24373f6a18855102e3cdf88c462d91b90b6153a10561a9afaa5a50303/1.1.prostorna-analiza-prefabricirana-vernakularnost.gif" data-mid="196642693" border="0" data-scale="50" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/700/i/199b4be24373f6a18855102e3cdf88c462d91b90b6153a10561a9afaa5a50303/1.1.prostorna-analiza-prefabricirana-vernakularnost.gif" />

︎

the two ordered pairs establish new cycles and landscapes, but ultimately perpetuate everyday life in nin.

︎

ždrijac: dense togetherness

ždrijac is good enough. by walking through it, by looking at the houses and the roads and the yards, we see spaces that are nice and filled with ordinary life. that is something to preserve.

<img width="2125" height="1754" width_o="2125" height_o="1754" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3dd8b03f171759434e1e83e62819e98a8374f39ced16cac9172541312a32874b/soft-buffers_dense-togetherness.jpg" data-mid="196636006" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3dd8b03f171759434e1e83e62819e98a8374f39ced16cac9172541312a32874b/soft-buffers_dense-togetherness.jpg" />

instead of searching for a new typology, we're looking at the existing structures and the way they're coexisting. seeing the cozy spatial relations of ždrijac made us want to mimic them.

narrow, unstructured roads, framed with plants or fences that people chose because they like them, seem like the perfect size for the built environment that they serve - bringing houses closer to each other.

the sprawl that happens in ždrijac is a semi-controlled one, defined by a soft frame and a simple rule that can be interpreted in many ways. we want to encourage a nice kind of density, the kind where you feel at home in your neighborhood. in order for that to happen, a border is crucial: by enclosing areas of construction, we're preserving unbuilt space while eliminating the carelessness of building anywhere.

the existing roads spread out, making room for more small houses.

some areas of ždrijac are left empty, but not in the capacity of a square or some 'official' public space, simply as a breather.

the houses that are already here serve as a basis for setting up the building parameter.

what we liked a lot was the ever-present outdoor space: a terrace, a balcony, a loggia, even a gazebo. these are the buffer zones between the conditioned indoors and the (sometimes) hostile outdoors. by boosting such spaces, we're trying to eliminate the need for excessive energy consumption indoors. these elements are cooling devices.

another crucial element is the appearance of the auxiliary building. these small sheds vary in size, and are used in many ways.

we wanted to establish a correlation between these two house elements, and make them almost inevitable. without them, a house is lonely and anonymous: nowhere to expand, nowhere to shrink, no space to occupy.

the most important rule:

a house must have an open space of any kind.

if an auxiliary building appears, it can be only as big as the open space, but not bigger.

a house can consist of the open space and auxiliary space alone.

<img width="2000" height="777" width_o="2000" height_o="777" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cc2a03d078a2cc2f6537a5762ddc1a7714de3b62b010fa7f7c8575a816525729/4.kolaz---jednostavno-pravilo.jpg" data-mid="196633655" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cc2a03d078a2cc2f6537a5762ddc1a7714de3b62b010fa7f7c8575a816525729/4.kolaz---jednostavno-pravilo.jpg" />
︎

the constructed forest gently envelops and supports the neighborhood. it is an air conditioning device, an image of a shelter, a colonnade to walk by, a container for public facilities (such as the saltworks museum, parking, playgrounds or sports courts), or simply a soft border.

the forest is also a way to deal with climate change since trees serve as natural carbon storage. the proposed tree canopy surrounding ždrijac plays a vital role in keeping the neighborhood cool, as well as in protecting it from harsh winds.

the territory is easily filled with activities and services during periods of maximum crowdedness; during the hibernation months, it is a space that lets itself be reclaimed by the leftover residents in whichever ways it suits them.

<img width="6071" height="1960" width_o="6071" height_o="1960" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1c69ffaa723a90360e3bc132813926ff8633c81eed4c95380817fbba8d29d7fe/soft-buffers_zdrijac.jpg" data-mid="192008905" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1c69ffaa723a90360e3bc132813926ff8633c81eed4c95380817fbba8d29d7fe/soft-buffers_zdrijac.jpg" />

familiar landscape

the area of the brickyard - already a landmark - becomes a constructed wetland, a purifying agent for the thickly populated ždrijac. the proposed waste management strategy doesn't aim to build a structure of any kind, but instead to establish a territory. this way, it can preserve unbuilt space, while simultaneously creating a new landscape that fits with the existing terrain. the vegetated wetland is, also, a significant climate change buffer, and one of the most effective carbon sinks.

<img width="2000" height="1956" width_o="2000" height_o="1956" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cd967f21b1d365a15045b746fd19606f7937c791975c7a06242eeae2008eeeb0/6.-nacrt---polja--mocvara-i-solana.jpg" data-mid="192009101" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cd967f21b1d365a15045b746fd19606f7937c791975c7a06242eeae2008eeeb0/6.-nacrt---polja--mocvara-i-solana.jpg" />

the size of the wetland is determined by the maximum number of habitants in ždrijac at the peak of the tourist season (approx. 3 m² per resident). the wetland adapts to the found environment, becoming more than a device. in the areas of minimal intrusions, it becomes the familiar grid with a clear purpose; in 'wilder' places, with trees, paths, and other obstacles, it acts more like a natural landscape.

<img width="2000" height="1000" width_o="2000" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/276a449b97b400a04052fb1f9ce2cd112815a2b466124ccd3390f4dd1c6fa097/5.1.-kolaz-ciglana-i-mocvara_croppana-pozadina-72dpi.png" data-mid="192009006" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/276a449b97b400a04052fb1f9ce2cd112815a2b466124ccd3390f4dd1c6fa097/5.1.-kolaz-ciglana-i-mocvara_croppana-pozadina-72dpi.png" />

the constructed wetland sets up a new tradition of dealing with human waste - turning it into potential for creating a new biome. the wastewater treatment produces a byproduct of sludge. it needs to be collected and dried, after which it is mostly used as a fertilizer. this cycle is reminiscent of the brickyard's previous purpose: harvesting raw material form its surroundings, processing it, and giving back to the community.

The gardens are situated in Dubrava, a large neighbourhood in Zagreb. They have evolved over several decades through the process of reclaiming derelict territory. Through human efforts of cultivation and resourceful use of nearby materials, they are ultimately transformed into cherished public spaces within the community.&nbsp;
︎

Some gardens contain objects which often take the form of comical utilitarian sheds designed to store tools, seeds, and other necessities for successful agriculture. These sheds are remarkable engineering achievements in resourcefulness, effectively coping with scarce resources. They are abundant with various patents and creatively repurpose discarded items from houses and apartments.Notably, they serve as commendable examples of sustainability.︎

The primary objective of this project is to change the perception of spontaneously and semi-legally created spaces and recognise them as valuable spatial and social heritage. By fostering open discussions among professionals and the public, the project lays the foundation for future planning and preservation.[ more text and images coming soon ... ]

LAYERS

The initial impression of the site presents a scene at the outskirts of the city — a forest landscape characterized by multiple layers of vegetation, encompassing grasslands, abundant shrubbery, and dense trees.

Each stratum of this botanical composition fosters a distinct habitat, accommodating a diverse array of fauna and, in turn, contributing to the richness of the natural environment.

Unlike traditional urban planning, which often focuses on the city, this project takes a different approach. It begins by observing and understanding nature, aiming to restore its continuity and reinforce its intricate layering within the city area.
RAILWAY

The railway station extends the Södra Hamn park, taking the form of a slope featuring a new city beach and park. The pavilions at the railway station collectively create a botanical park that overlooks the sea.&nbsp;

Instead of being a conventional building, an entrance pavilion in the shape of a tower serves as an observation deck, strategically positioned in the Uddmansgatan axis, becoming a prominent city landmark.

<img width="5874" height="2533" width_o="5874" height_o="2533" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8341187016310df11b36027a8996dacbae19aa981f68b15bb8b946995fa412e4/SE-Pitea-PS-P15-after-copy-less.jpg" data-mid="218292035" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8341187016310df11b36027a8996dacbae19aa981f68b15bb8b946995fa412e4/SE-Pitea-PS-P15-after-copy-less.jpg" />

<img width="6074" height="4500" width_o="6074" height_o="4500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/afc66faad5144a7c5c6ae8bf4e3787cadd3db997bfc332085730edd803017908/kolodvor2.jpg" data-mid="199596271" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/afc66faad5144a7c5c6ae8bf4e3787cadd3db997bfc332085730edd803017908/kolodvor2.jpg" />
PARKS AND RECREATION&nbsp;

Existing parks and public spaces are positioned mostly along the seaside. This principle has been applied to the creation of new parks and beaches as well.

On the opposing shores, industrial complexes stand tall, marked by their prominent high chimneys and white steam, serving as distinctive landmarks in the area. To seamlessly integrate these industrial areas into city life, the coast along their edges has been reclaimed, resulting in the formation of greenways. The greenways contain pedestrian and bicycle paths, as well as dense vegetation. Through this approach, the industrial sector becomes an integral part of the public domain rather than being excluded. The expansion of the coastline also gives rise to new natural areas and habitats, providing every resident with a peaceful spot and a sense of privacy.&nbsp;

GARDENS

Vegetation strata are making a comeback in private house plots. A typical garden is no longer merely a neat lawn; in some places, it appears hidden, shaggy, and overgrown. This restoration of habitats and biodiversity occurs in the contact areas between the forest and suburbs. Additionally, alongside houses and garages, there are greenhouses cultivating vegetables, giving the garden not only an aesthetic function but also a productive one. This transition towards more productive gardens fosters a new culture, reducing transport costs, and minimizing the carbon footprint.

Zones adjacent to industrial plants transform into urban gardens. Gardens embody a symbiosis between humans and nature, acting as incubators for biodiversity and communal meeting places. Apart from the economic advantages, they also offer numerous health, psychological, and social benefits. The conglomeration of gardens contributes to a vibrant public space within the city.

The forest hut resulted from a collaboration between an artist and an architect, but it challenges the romantic ideal with its unconventional proportions. It's notably shallow and partly shorter than an average person. The roof's ridge runs perpendicular to the longer side of the facade, creating varying interior heights. Raised on supports, it doesn't intrude on the ground.
Despite plans for a bark facade that fell through due to circumstances, the cabin lacks shelter. Its contents remain constantly visible and unprotected, aligning with the conclusions of artistic research. The notion of escaping civilization is proven to be an impossible and somewhat alienating romantic concept.The Hut, situated near the Bikčević trail on Medvednica, spent several months on Tusti Breg. It served as a reward and place of rest for those who prefered an alternative route rather than the main path.
